The final night of the first edition of Film on the Rocks Yao Noi took place on Archipelago Cinema, which is designed by German-born and Beijing-based architect Ole Scheeren. Archipelago Cinema is a collaboration between Studio Ole Scheeren and the Film on the Rocks Yao Noi Foundation, founded by Nat Sarasas, Chomwan Weeraworawit and Apichatpong Weerasethakul. Guests where taken to this floating cinema through the darkness and sea to witness one of the most unique cinemas in the world. The surroundings are just amazing, quiet dark ocean around you and fresh air. The floating cinema was located at Nai Pi Lae lagoon on Kudu Island.
After when this Archipelago Cinema has done it’s job, it will be returned to local community of Yao Noi. After all, the construction has been done similarly as local fishermen construct floating lobster farms with recycled materials. Local people can use it how they see it’s best. We hope to see more this kind of recycled movie theater ideas if their usage can be changed easily to something else based on the needs of local people.
